If safe isolation is not carried out properly, the risk is not only yours:

  • You, as the inspector, working on something you believe is dead
  • Others working around you, moving past or above you
  • The public, who may come into contact with live parts you have left accessible
You will not always be in a house. A shopping centre, a hospital, an underground station. The procedure does not change, but the consequences of skipping it do.
Expect to be asked to work out of hours. A factory does not want downtime, and will not pay staff to sit at home while you inspect. The same in a shop — isolating a lighting circuit means that area cannot be used safely, so customers have to go elsewhere.

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
