Nobody reads this book cover to cover, and nobody expects you to memorise it. Put plainly: there is no practising electrician, inspector or installer who can quote every regulation in here — that's why it lives in the van. The skill being examined is navigation.

The paperWhat you get
Questions60, multiple choice
Time2 hours (120 minutes) — about 2 minutes a question on average
Open bookYes. Your own clean copy of BS 7671 goes in with you, plus a calculator
OrderNot in book order. Expect to flip front to back and back again all paper
Pass markNot published. Marked per section, so a weak part can sink you even with a strong total

Roughly how the 60 questions fall:

PartQuestionsNote
Part 14Scope, object, fundamental principles
Part 22Definitions only — but you'll be sent back here from other parts
Part 415About 70 pages of book
Part 514The other monster
!Parts 4 and 5 together are 29 of the 60 questions — near enough half the paper from two parts of the book. That's where your revision time goes.
✋Your book must go in clean. You may highlight and you may use tabs. You may not draw arrows, write pencil notes, cross-reference page numbers in the margin, or leave post-it notes in. Use post-its while revising if you like, but take them out before the exam.
Exam technique worth repeating. RTFQ — read the question. The words that catch people out are not, excluded and except. Your eye skips them and you confidently pick a right-sounding wrong answer.

One more practical point. When you do practice papers, don't memorise letters: the question order and the answer order both shuffle, so learn the answer, not "it was C".
