The schedule of test results, set up before you start

A blank results sheet looks like a hundred empty boxes. Most of them can be dealt with before you test anything:

  • Draw a line through every spare.
  • N/A the ring columns (r1, rn, r2) for every circuit that isn’t a ring.
  • Decide whether you’re proving CPCs by Method 1 or Method 2, and N/A the column you’re not using.
  • Write in your insulation resistance test voltage, 500 V for a 230 V installation.
  • N/A the AFDD test-button column for circuits with no AFDD.
  • Fill in the instruments: make, model and serial number against each test function. One multifunction tester can cover several, and you N/A any function you’re not using.

At the top of the sheet, for the board itself, you’ll later record Zdb (on the main board, the box takes your Ze), the prospective fault current at the board, polarity confirmed, phase sequence on a three-phase board, and the SPD’s operational status.

Where each result goes, in test order

Following the sequence of tests, this is where each result is written, and which boxes on the certificate you go back and tick.

Brown is dead testing, blue is live. Each later practical covers one of these tests in full. The point here is where the numbers go, and the four boxes on the certificate you have to remember to come back to.
Why a Ze reading lets you tick the earthing conductor. For Ze your lead goes on the disconnected earthing conductor, so the loop you measure runs through it. A sensible reading means a continuous earth path from the MET end of the earthing conductor all the way back to the source.

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
