Guidance Note 3 · 2.6.18 · p.95. The book has you press the RCD's own test button before you use the test instrument — and the earth fault loop impedance is tested before the RCD tests.

Practice on site: press it before you test, carry out the RCD tests, then press it again afterwards to confirm the device is still functioning. Twice.
✋If the button does not trip it, stop. The device has failed and is replaced — there is no point carrying on with the RCD tests. Testing manually rather than on auto lets you run half times and one times without the optional five times test.
