Inspection and testing of the fixed wiring is one exam: Level 2 Fundamental Inspection & Testing.

📕It's open book, and the only book you may take in is Guidance Note 3.

"Which bit of the book do I need to know?"

Everyone asks it, and the answer is the honest one: all of it. Nobody knows which part your questions will be drawn from. Guidance Note 3 covers periodic inspection, initial verification, safety and the model forms — and the fact a section is headed "initial verification" doesn't mean it's off the table.

Initial verification is inspection and testing of a brand new circuit or installation. Whether or not the exam is called fundamentals, this is the starting process — the sequence of tests you'll use for the rest of your career.

Two parts to the assessment

  1. An online exam.
  2. A practical assessment. You inspect and test a board and complete an Electrical Installation Certificate. You get two hours.
✋You cannot take a pre-written certificate in. Not one you filled in for practice, not a printed one, not a digital copy. Practise on them as much as you like — but nothing pre-filled goes into the exam with you.

How the exam breaks down

UnitWhat it asks
Safe isolationThe first thing examined
Initial verificationThe EIC, dead tests and live tests
Testing prior to energisingThe requirements for safe testing and commissioning — the dead tests
DocumentationCompleting EICs and associated certification
Why safe isolation comes first. Get it wrong while practising and you have time to go back and fix it — nobody gets hurt. Get it wrong out there, and somebody energises the system while you're working on it. That's the whole reason it comes before anything else.
