Guidance Note 3 · p.15 · section 1.2, required competence. Compare the wording with BS 7671's definition of a skilled person:

RoleStandard of knowledge
Skilled person (BS 7671)Adequate knowledge, training and skills
Inspector (Guidance Note 3)Sound knowledge
Sound is a higher bar than adequate. The page goes on to say inspectors must also have relevant education and experience — so that you can see risk. Courses alone do not get you there; you have to have been out doing it.

And the responsibility that comes with it, for initial or periodic inspection as appropriate: preventing danger to any person or livestock, and preventing damage to property.

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
