This is method 2’s real job. And it starts with one rule that is not negotiable.

✋The whole installation is isolated before any bonding comes off. Not one circuit — all of it. Disconnecting the bonding on a live installation is unclipping your seatbelt on the motorway: an earth fault, or a potential coming in on a pipe, now has nowhere safe to go.
  1. Installation isolated. Disconnect one main protective bonding conductor from the MET. Only one at a time.
  2. Clip the long lead to the disconnected bonding conductor, on clean copper.
  3. Probe the bonding clamp at the pipe — the screw, or a clean part of the clamp.
  4. Then probe the pipe itself, on clean metal. That proves the clamp is actually connected to the pipe, not just sitting on it.
  5. Reconnect it. Every time, before the next one comes off.

Disconnecting the bond removes the parallel paths: with it still on the MET, supplementary bonding elsewhere could carry the test current round another way, and a broken bond would still read fine.
