This is not a revision page. If you want to know what safe isolation is and why

This page answers a different question: what do your hands do, in what order, with someone watching. You can describe the procedure perfectly and still fail it.

✋One part of this genuinely is new. Safe isolation now has a layer wrapped round it that is not in the module notes: a check for diverted neutral current, before you isolate and again after. It is in Guidance Note 3, Appendix D, and it is eight steps — the familiar drill is only the second of them. If you learned this procedure as “switch off, lock off, prove dead”, that is now the middle of the job rather than the whole of it.
Read it, then print the bench card at the end. The card is the point of this lesson. Run it at the bench until you stop needing it.

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
