Lay it out and look at it before you start: without any one of these you can’t do the job safely. Check every item, even kit someone else has packed — the checking is part of what you are assessed on, not a formality.

ItemWhat it is for
Approved voltage indicatorA two-pole tester. Proving dead. Its leads and probes meet GS38
Proving unitA known source, to prove the AVI works — before and after
Padlock and keyLocking off. The key stays in your pocket, on you, at all times
Lock-off devicesClip into an MCB to hold it off. The hole takes your padlock
Multi-lock haspSeveral trades on one board. It does not come off until the last lock does
Warning signSo anyone coming to that board can see it is locked out
Clamp meterCurrent in the earthing and main bonding conductors, before and after isolating. A leakage clamp is more accurate below 5 mA than a load one
Non-contact voltage detectorA volt stick. Appendix D asks for one specifically — a two-pole tester cannot do its job here
BarriersIf the public can reach where you are working
✋The single-pole tester is not for proving dead. A fault stick is genuinely useful — an open PEN fault on TN-C-S is exactly what it is for. It still does not prove a circuit dead. Neither does a test screwdriver.
