(The café) What's recorded on the Minor Works certificate about the additional protection for the new sockets?
- aThe RCD type
- bThe AFDD rating
- cThe SPD type
- dThe OCPD rating
Answer a. The certificate here is a Minor Works certificate. When you see "additional protection", think of two things:
- Supplementary bonding: you'll come across a lot of it, but it's rarely installed now. It isn't relevant to adding sockets.
- 30 mA RCDs: the common one. Only an RCD of 30 mA or less counts as additional protection (in practice, 30 mA). Reg 411.3.3 requires it for socket-outlets.
The Minor Works certificate has a place to record the RCD, including its type.
GN3 · Section 5 · Minor Works certificate · RCD details · p.155 BS 7671 · Reg 411.3.3 · additional protection for socket-outlets
The regulation covers socket-outlets rated up to 32 A. Under Amendment 4 the only exception is for sockets that ordinary people and children aren't liable to use, backed by a documented risk assessment done with a skilled person involved. In an exam, "new sockets" still means think 30 mA RCD.
On an EICR, what does the main protective conductors box ask for?
- aLocation and material
- bLength and csa
- cMaterial and csa
- dLocation and length
Answer c. Open the EICR. It has a box headed main protective conductors asking for the material and cross-sectional area (csa).
