Notifying work, and the Competent Person Scheme

To notify work you either join a Competent Person Scheme — in your own right or through the company you work for — or you do not join one and pay building control to do it instead.

Where an installation's history comes from. If a client cannot supply it, documentation will usually have gone to the local authority, building control or the DNO at the time.

Third-party inspection, and why it is not easy money

A registered inspector can be brought in as a third party to inspect and certify someone else's work. The question to sit with: would you?

The problem with work you did not watch go in

A cable has been run through a wall that needed chasing.

Was the chase cut to the right depth?
Is the cable the right type for that chase?
Does it have the correct mechanical protection?

The wall has been filled and skimmed. You cannot see any of it.
Your tests may come back perfect and your inspection at each
end may be fine — and you still would not know.
Photographs are not the answer either. How many electricians photograph their own first fix? Almost none, unless they are an apprentice building a portfolio.
✋So if you are asked to third-party it, ask to be there during installation. The only way to confirm what went into a wall or a ceiling void is to inspect it before it is covered up. Treat it like a new job — do not assume the first fix was good.

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
