A common ask is "which calculation do I use when?" The answer could have been a list of "if the question says this, do that calculation". It deliberately isn't.

  • Don't focus on exam questions as such. Understand the subject, and the questions answer themselves.
  • Learning "question type → calculation" teaches you to be a robot. Aim to be a designer, an inspector, an electrician. A master at this.
  • Turn it round. Start with a calculation, think about what it's actually doing, then write your own question around it. Do your own legwork.
Try it
Take any line of the table below. Change one number in the examples (the length, the load, the temperature, the number of grouped circuits) and work it through again. Then ask yourself: who would do this calculation, and why?

Test yourself on it

The tests are in the members’ area. Get one wrong and it shows you why, and where to revise.
